Inspired by the new performance arena—the Lappeenranta City Theatre opened in January 2016—the Lappeenranta Ballet Gala 2016 will offer extraordinary and unprecedented performances. Ballet Gala performances will take place on 26 and 27 August. Ticket sales began in the beginning of February.

The artistic director of the Ballet Gala Juhani Teräsvuori describes the programme of the Ballet Gala 2016 as interesting, moving, and partly electric. Performances will feature dance virtuosity with live music and pure joy.

The Ballet Gala programme again includes a world premiere. This time, besides the choreography, music will also be premiered. Maestro Iiro Rantala has composed music for the world premiere and will also perform it himself. The artistic director of the Czech National Ballet and a distinguished choreographer Petr Zuska is responsible for the choreography.

Electricity is in the air, as one of the most internationally recognised Finnish jazz musicians, piano virtuoso and composer Iiro Rantala, takes to the stage with dancers from the Czech National Ballet.

The main international guest at the Ballet Gala is the Ballet of Dortmund from Germany. Their performance Cacti also includes live music.

“Cacti is a layered work in which the choreography dives inside the dancers’ head and reflects the various dimensions of dance in ways that are sometimes hilarious. The work has become an international hit, and it offers entertainment and joy as well as food for thought,” Juhani Teräsvuori describes.

The choreographer of Cacti, Alexander Ekman, continues the triumph of modern Swedish choreographers. His works are performed all over the world, and Cacti has already been performed by at least 15 ballet companies.

The second work performed by the Ballet of Dortmund is William Forsythe’s all-time favourite The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude. The choreographer dresses Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 into a fully neoclassical form and elegance. The choreography offers 11 minutes of pure and lively dance virtuosity.

William Forsythe is a pioneer of neoclassical ballet and has significantly shaped ballet towards the new millennium during his long career. He has created this performance as a salute to the great master, George Balanchine.

Something new, something old

Other treats include a classical performance by prima ballerina Misa Kuranaga from the Boston Ballet, and choreography by Jorma Elo who is the most successful Finnish choreographer internationally.

Dancers Emilia Vuorio and Arthur Abram from the Ballet of the National Theatre in Brno, Czech Republic present a duet from Black and White. The choreography is the creation of the Director of Brno Ballet Mario Radacovsky.

In addition, we will again meet the charming dancers Carlos Pinillos and Philipa de Castro from the Portuguese National Ballet.

Performances will take place on the main stage of the Lappeenranta City Theatre on 26 August 2016 at 7 pm and on 27 August 2016 at 2 pm and 7 pm. Lappeenranta's new City Theatre is located in the city centre at the top floor of the IsoKristiina shopping centre (Kaivokatu 5).
