Basic education

Compulsory education begins the year your child turns seven. A young person may remain in basic education for children until they have completed the basic education syllabus or until the end of the academic year they turn 17. Compulsory education ends when a young person turns 18 or when they gain a matriculation examination or vocational examination.

Your child will receive general basic education free of charge in the comprehensive schools of the City of Lappeenranta, of which there are 17. In total, there are approximately 6,200 pupils. In addition, the city has a Steiner School and the Finnish-Russian School of Eastern Finland, which are maintained by private operators.

The comprehensive schools of the City of Lappeenranta are located in five local government collaboration areas: Joutseno, Kesämäki, Kimpinen, Lauritsala and Sammonlahti. Your child’s local school is determined by their official home address registered in the Population Information System. For more information on school admission areas, visit Customer Service Centre Winkki or the city’s map service.

Instructions

Basic education is organised in accordance with the Basic Education Act and the Basic Education Decree. The content and working methods of instruction are described in the national core curriculum approved by the Finnish National Agency for Education. In addition, each school has their own specified curriculum, which you can explore on the schools’ websites.

We aim to organise basic education in such a way that every child can attend school according to their skills and experience the joy of learning. In addition to smooth studies, we also consider it important that the pupils feel safe at school.
