EHCC_WINNER_Finland_2014 web.jpgLappeenranta was one of the 14 best cities in the international WWF Earth Hour City Challenge, participating as the only city in Finland. Lappeenranta together with EHCC cities of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Brussels, Belgium, Copenhagen, Denmark, Monteria, Colombia, Seoul, South Korea, Stockholm, Sweden, Coimbatore, India and Vancouver, Canada have signed the WWF’s Seize Your Power pledge where the city commits towards low carbon development coupled with significant investments and favourable policies for enabling the growth of renewables based energy use.

Lappeenranta has already shown strong progress within renewable energy with high quality and innovative programs including groundbreaking projects in bioenergy, solar, hydrogen generation, transportation. The city has pursued these programs with strong collaborations with the education sector and industry incubation. The EHCC recognition coupled with the city’s strategic goal of becoming a model of eco action encourages the green wave.

Development goal for Lappeenranta is to make the city a testing ground for eco-friendly innovations, such as the ongoing construction of the Kivisalmi pumping station and the new renewably powered solutions in the boating and public transport sectors.

Solar powered marina: Lappeenranta’s marina was open to a competition for students to design Finand’s first green harbour. Students came up with ecological concepts to provide water and energy to the site alongside innovative services and leisure activities. The marina is now being powered by a new 5.5Kw solar plantpledge explainer text.jpg.

Development of a hybrid bus: The city has joint up with three different local educational institutes to design a new type of energy efficient hybrid powered bus, the CAMBUS. Researchers claim that the bus will have the potential to help halve the current level of urban emissions in the city and that the technology used can easily be modified to fit different types and makes of buses and machinery.

Lappeenranta 2028 strategic goals is to develop Lappeenranta into a model city for eco action in which having a clean living environment and a zero-waste world are sources of innovative business growth. A clean living environment and sustainable well-being make Lappeenranta a comfortable place for residents and tourists to enjoy, and commit to setting up local businesses here.
