EUR 77.8 Million Financing Strengthens Solar Foods’ Plans for Industrial-Scale Production in Lappeenranta
Solar Foods, a global pioneer in sustainable protein production, has been granted EUR 77.8 million in grant and loan financing for the construction and commissioning of its planned Factory 02 production facility in Lappeenranta.
According to Lappeenranta's Mayor Tuomo Sallinen, the funding awarded by Business Finland strengthens the prospects of implementing the production facility in Lappeenranta.
- While this is not yet the final confirmation of the project, the situation now looks very positive. However, the City is still awaiting Solar Foods’ final investment decision before the project can be fully confirmed.
- From our region’s perspective, Business Finland’s funding decision was highly welcome news. If the factory project moves forward, it will bring a significant number of industrial jobs based on new technology to the area. In addition, the construction phase is expected to create employment opportunities across various sectors in the Lappeenranta region.
Factory 02 will be Solar Foods’ first industrial-scale production facility. It will increase the company’s annual production capacity of its Solein® protein from 160 tonnes at Factory 01, which began operations in spring 2024, to 6,400 tonnes per year.
Solar Foods had previously selected a site in Lappeenranta as the location for the future Factory 02 production facility.
The City of Lappeenranta has decided to initiate preliminary site development work during the summer of 2026. This includes preparatory activities such as tree clearing and land grading. Solar Foods is responsible for the planning and costs of these works.
Solar Foods continues to prepare its investment decision and plans to make a final decision on the construction of Factory 02 during 2026.
