Welcome to follow how companies and organizations reduce waste generation and increase recycling rates

The project responds to the needs of regional SMEs and other organizations, as currently there is not sufficient waste management guidance available for companies or mixed-use residential–commercial buildings.

Objectives

The aim of the development work is to strengthen the vitality and sustainability of the South Karelia region by creating new solutions for material recycling and by supporting companies in reducing waste and improving sorting efficiency.

The target group consists especially of SMEs and mixed-use residential–commercial buildings, where sorting is carried out by both tenants and ground-floor businesses. The goal is to improve sorting opportunities and skills, which enhances motivation to sort waste and reduces waste management costs.

The focus is on material recycling, recovery, and waste prevention. Improving separate collection of biowaste in particular supports regional security of supply through biogas and fertilizer production. As an outcome of the development work, a sorting guide will be produced for companies and mixed-use buildings. It will be available for all transport companies and distributed throughout the South Karelia region.

Implementation

LAB University of Applied Sciences leads this development project in cooperation with the City of Lappeenranta and South Karelia Waste Management. The project began in December 2025 and will run until December 2027. The project supports the goals of the South Karelia Regional Programme and the Osaava Suomi 2021–2027 programme.
